Arpeggio - Throat
Still Images

These still images, extracted from the video clip of the Bb Major arpeggio, highlight the changes in the tongue, glottis, and pharyngeal wall across the range of the alto saxophone from Bb3 to F7. The pharyngeal space is narrow for the pitch of Bb3 and becomes increasingly more open as the saxophonist moves into the higher octaves. For the pitches in the altissimo register (Bb6, D7, and F7), the glottis squeezes and elevates (appearing closer to the viewer).
